Don't Wait Until You "Lose Your Marbles." ❤️
I joke about estate planning because I want it to feel less intimidating. I even give every client a humorous End-of-Life Planner because sometimes laughter makes it easier to talk about hard things.
But there's one part that isn't funny.
Almost every week, someone calls me hoping to help a parent, grandparent, or spouse who has developed dementia or can no longer understand what's happening around them.
Their question is usually:
"Can we still do a will?"
"Can we put the house in a trust?"
"Can they just sign this deed?"
My heart sinks every time.
The law requires that a person understand what they're signing. If someone no longer has the mental capacity to make informeddecisions, they generally cannot legally sign a will, trust, deed, power of attorney, or many other estate planning documents.
By then, the options are often far more limited, more expensive, and much more stressful for the family.
Estate planning isn't just something you do before you die.
It's something you do while you're still able to make your own decisions.
If you're reading this and thinking, "I've been meaning to get around to it..." this is your gentle reminder.
Don't wait for a crisis.
Let's make a plan while you're still the one calling the shots.
